Vasilisa’s PhD research project focuses on examining the ethical implications of natural language processing. It is supervised by Dr Zeerak Talat in the School of Informatics.

Vasilisa’s research interests lie in low-resource languages and the ethical issues they face in generative NLP. Before starting her PhD, she worked as an ML engineer in game development, building recommendation systems, predictive models, and NLP tools for chat moderation and support automation. Vasilisa has an academic background in pure mathematics (BSc) and computer science (MSc). Her master’s thesis explored unsupervised learning for machine translation of Sakha, a low-resource language that is also her mother tongue.
