Alice Ross
Alice is a PhD student at the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Natural Language Processing, looking at speech technology and human-computer interaction. Supervised by Dr Catherine Lai and Prof Lauren Hall-Lew, her project aims to explore the experiences, attitudes, and concerns of people who have speech difficulties in new contexts such as voice interfaces and videotelephony.
Alice’s background is in Linguistics, and she worked in video game development at Rockstar Games for almost ten years before returning to academia. Alice considers speech technology and its applications from a feminist/anarchist angle. Autonomy, accessibility and sustainability are key values, and she is interested in what we stand to gain and lose in adopting new technologies: Who is empowered? Who is disenfranchised?
