Who’s talking - and who’s listening? Speech science and technology in social contexts
Project dates:
September 2023 - September 2027
Name of the PhD student
Alice Ross
Supervisors:
Dr Catherine Lai - School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences/Centre for Speech Technology Research
Professor Lauren Hall-Lew - School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences
Project aims:
This project examines how language attitudes and ideologies inform design decisions in speech technology, reviewing claims from speech science and psychology with an awareness of communicative goals and (speaker and listener) identity as expansive, fluid and intersectional. I use mixed methods, aiming to engage with diverse talkers in qualitative work to explore their own beliefs and awareness about the voice alongside analysing recordings. I aim to contribute to our understanding of (present and future) social impacts of speech technologies’ design and deployment.
