Project aims:

The project aims to understand how people conceive of privacy in relation to the State in the context of information sharing in reproductive and maternal welfare schemes in India. With the introduction of ICT mechanisms in welfare services, as modes of interaction with the State evolve, the question of how welfare beneficiaries perceive and conceptualise the question of the control and use of their data becomes even more pertinent. Through interviews and participant observations with frontline health workers and welfare beneficiaries in Uttar Pradesh, India, the project aims to understand State-citizen relationships in terms of the processes and ethics of information sharing, and explore situated notions of (the right to) privacy.
