Claire Barale

Claire's PhD research project aims at enabling ethical human-AI reasoning in international law. It is co-supervised in the School of Informatics’ Artificial Intelligence and its Applications Institute and the School of Law.

Claire's current research focuses on building AI data-driven tools able to effectively and ethically improve legal decision making in the context of refugee law. She is exploring the links between machine learning and other disciplines such as law and human rights processes, cognitive sciences, human-AI cooperation and ethics. Prior to beginning her PhD, Claire worked on the implementation of privacy-preserving smart contracts in corporate law and researched algorithmic fairness using explanations generation at LAMSADE laboratory in Paris. Before that, she studied economics and finance at Paris Dauphine University and worked as a financial analyst. She received her masters of research in computer science from PSL Research University in 2021.
